Welcome to my first post of 2017, after much thought about the aim of my blog this year, I’ve decided to focus on helping all of you design and interiors lovers out there to find your own mix on modern style.
Most people find it really difficult to define a style for their home that reflects their own personality – we all struggle with this because there is so much out there – so many choices, trends and magazines telling us what our style should be.
My take on it is: if you start with a modern base, and layer your own personal taste on top – you have a foolproof way to create your own unique style in your home.
And I really want to show you that modern doesn't have to be too 'design-ery' or expensive either, it is an achievable style on many budgets.
But what is modern anyway?
Modern is based on "form follows function" – open floor plans, spaciousness and clean lines define the style.
It is forward thinking and wants to break strongly from tradition.
'Modern' and 'contemporary' are often interchanged, but contemporary is a term for design that is current and of-the-moment, but which could easily seem dated in ten years or so.
You could get caught up in the technicalities, and interior design purists would definitely have their individual opinions and definitions on the two, but I think that when most people visualize modern design, they picture an open, spacious and functional space.
The basics of modern interiors are clean, simple lines, with a strong focus on form, function and organisation.
Clean lines feature in furniture, and there is an extremely strong focus on simplicity. But in my opinion, the beauty of modern style lies in how adaptable it is; you can style it quite starkly if you prefer minimal, or you can incorporate another style on top to give it warmth, and a whole new dimension.
But mostly, I love modern design because of the positive effect it has on the way we now live. It seems to increase space and create the illusion of a larger room, and is particularly suitable for urban living.
It makes our busy lives that little bit easier, because spaces are carefully planned and designed to meet our needs.
Rooms are organised, and more easily kept clean, and suddenly, little life luxuries, like spur of the moment entertaining is actually possible!
Stick with me!
I’m going to show you how you can take these modern basics and inject your own style to make your home a stylish haven that reflects your own personality and better compliments your life.
